'True Blood' (2.3) "Scratches" – Review

I'm constantly surprised by True Blood and how the show will make you think it's going one way and then suddenly it'll do a quick spin and make you think, "Wow, didn't see that playing out like that." For example, a seemingly routine fight between Bill and Sookie over Jessica's actions last week, pave the way for a mystery and getting several characters into brand-new storyline potentials. So what is the one act that changes everything?

After having to glamour Jessica's parents after her attack last week, Bill is furious with Sookie for undermining his authority and taking her there in the first place. Some heated words are exchanged, Sookie gets out of the car to walk home, when out of the dark a vaguely human looking monster with talons for hands and what looks like a bull head because of the horns (or maybe Tim Curry's demon in the movie Legend) attacks her. The monster tears up Sookie's back, placing a poison in her that even Bill's blood can't cure. Will Sookie be saved or will she succumb to a creature that even Eric doesn't know?

Beyond Jason's story that has still yet to impress me, most everything from this episode comes from this one scene that came out of nowhere. I thought the argument scene would play like every other fight, but then suddenly a mysterious creature is upon Sookie and my head is dizzy. Besides being a big mystery that almost kills Sookie and leaves Eric scratching his head, the attack ultimately leads to Lafayette being freed and being surprisingly tied to Daphne (Sam's new waitress at the bar).

I think Maryann is the demon (or the cause of it) that attacked Sookie. She knows Tara was thinking of moving in with her, she has ties to Sam, so it makes a bit of sense. It's possible, though, that Daphne could be the beast…kind of like how a werewolf can be turned into a werewolf after an attack. Speaking of werewolves, the term has officially been used in the show as being in existence, so it's only a matter of time before one shows up in the show.

I'm amazed that Jason has fallen so far from last season; he was always closely involved in many of the show's greatest mysteries, but here he's completely separated from the regular cast and all by his lonesome. There's no dealing with drugs, vampires, her sister, Tara's love for him, or anything of the sort. Instead, Jason is just conflicted between good and evil and it's just not entertaining. Having never read the books and not knowing where the show is heading, I can only hope eventually Jason gets a nice, juicy store and back with the show's cast.

Continuing my love for Jessica, I really enjoyed her heading out to the bar and stumbling across Hoyt. Hoyt has always been the goofy mama's boy, so seeing him get some play from the amazingly cute Jessica is a real nice story for the guy (and her) that I hope to see played out. Jessica genuinely seems interested in Hoyt and not just in a snack way. The show could've had her keep her vampirism secret from Hoyt and drag that story out, but instead she puts it out front and center and still it's fine with him and he still likes her.

I hate that the show won't be on this coming week, as this episode really left me with questions and wanting to see what happens next.
