'Smallville' Creators To Work On Live-Action 'Robotech' Film
Mon, 11/17/2008 - 10:30 — Jason Van Horn
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar - the two creative minds behind the first seven seasons of the CW's Smallville - are going to be adapting the Robotech franchise into a live-action movie. As The Hollywood Reporter describes the movie:
"A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots."

'Dragonball' Movie Gets New Release Date
Wed, 11/12/2008 - 10:01 — Jason Van Horn
The Dragonball/Dragonball Z franchise was my gateway drug into the world of anime, so I hold a special place for it in my otaku loving heart. Perhaps that's why I take such offense to live-action Dragonball film, which is tarnishing the history of that series and the movie hasn't ever aired yet! An albino looking Piccolo? Goku turning into a monster from Gears of War rather than the giant monkey he should be? The movie is even closer to its release date than ever before, as the movie was just pushed up, and now it will be releasing on April 8, 2009.
Flood Of 'Naruto' Books In February
Fri, 11/07/2008 - 10:32 — Jason Van Horn
It's no secret that North American Naruto fans are way behind the Japanese releases. We haven't got to read half the content yet, and even the anime series seems to be a long ways away from airing the stuff the manga is now covering. Hoping to catch fans up at least a little, Viz is going to be releasing a batch of three manga at a time starting in February, culminating in a total of eleven books within a three month time span.

Tue, 11/04/2008 - 11:45 — Jason Van Horn
January is going to be a huge month for fans of the Afro Samurai franchise! For starters, the Afro Samurai videogame will be releasing on January 27th for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Secondly, a new movie called Afro Samurai: Resurrection will air, which will bring back fan favorite characters as well as introduce some new ones into the fray. It's going to be a huge month for Afro Samurai...January can't come soon enough.
FUNimation Needs Help With 'Sgt. Frog'
Tue, 11/04/2008 - 10:53 — Jason Van Horn
I really need to read the first volume - it's just sitting on my shelf untouched. It's cool to see, however, that FUNimation is looking to create the best Sgt. Frog release they can, so they've posted a test episode for everyone to see and then leave their feedback on. Leave your review on what you think, and if enough people have the same feeling, it is possible things could be changed to reflect the overall opinion of the people.
Hey...sounds like voting for a president doesn't it? Be sure to vote today if you live in the United States!

The popular Ninja Scroll anime series has just been picked up by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company to become a live-action film. No actors are attached to the film yet, but Alex Tse is set to write the script, whose latest work includes Zack Snyder's upcoming adaptation of Watchmen.
Manga Collection Gets Man Arrested
Mon, 10/13/2008 - 09:05 — Jason Van Horn
Umm...excuse me a moment.
(hurriedly runs to burn manga collection)
I don't know who is crazier - Iowa or humanity as a whole? There are simply too many things wrong with this case, which involves a man being arrested for the manga on his bookshelf. For starters, how did the mailman know the "package contained cartoon images of objectionable content" without opening it beforehand? Secondly, it's drawings, and someone's taking offense? If there is lolicon it's a little more questionable, but still not arrest worthy. I have Battle Royale and Saikano collected, featuring kids in high school, engaging in some nudity inducing behavior? Am I going to get in trouble? Hopefully, if there is any justice, this case will be thrown out quickly.
Manga Receives No Love From The Harvey Awards
Wed, 10/01/2008 - 09:25 — Jason Van Horn
Manga doesn't ever get any loving! Sure, fans love it, but when it comes to awards, rarely is even manga acknowledged, let alone win. It was par for the course at the 2008 Harvey Awards held at the Baltimore Comic-Con, which happened over the weekend. Oh well, maybe one day manga will have its chance to shine and win an award one way or another.

MSNBC Talks Anime Erotic Subculture
Fri, 09/12/2008 - 09:10 — Jason Van Horn
I did not write this article nor was I interviewed for it, but dang, it certainly strikes home on a lot of points. I refuse to answer about what parts I'm familiar with, but let's just say I know of everything going on in this article. On the plus side, I'd much rather have a real woman than a series of figures, so at least I'm not that bad...though my collection is slowly growing. It's actually a good read, so learn about the erotic life of the otaku.

The recent release of Naruto's thirty-first volume (review coming shortly) isn't only a great book, but it's breaking records too. In its first week of release, Naruto jumped onto the USA Today's best-sellers list, landing at the twenty-fourth spot, which is the highest position a debut manga has ever achieved on the list.
Five Very Strange Manga Titles
Mon, 09/08/2008 - 08:38 — Jason Van Horn
If anyone knows where to read or buy these - supposing there are English translations out there - drop me a line, because after reading about some of these very strange manga titles in the newest Japanator list, I want to check them out. Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge sounds like a neat premise, and as for My Balls...well...okay, so I want to read it too. Don't judge me for my perversions!
Totoro Forest Project Raises $45,000
Mon, 09/08/2008 - 08:22 — Jason Van Horn
Hayao Miyazaki is a legend in the anime industry. Totoro Forest, which inspired and was featured in Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro, wasn't being preserved as well as it should be given its ties to Miyazaki. In order to keep the forest alive and well and in the minds of all, the Totoro Forest Project was created to raise money to buy the land and keep it safe. The project just recently held a charity auction to raise money, bringing in a total of $45,000 to help in their efforts.
'Dragonball' Screenshots Make My Eyes Bleed
Wed, 09/03/2008 - 08:01 — Jason Van Horn
Whenever I post news regarding the Dragonball movie, I can't help but comment on how bad it looks. A few screenshots of the movie are starting to hit the net and only help solidify my opinion on the crappy looking nature of the movie. What have you done to one of my most beloved series? You turned Piccolo into an albino vampire! Piccolo is supposed to be green and purple! Argh!

Mon, 09/01/2008 - 08:22 — Jason Van Horn
It's not uncommon for Cartoon Network's programming blocks to just change suddenly, either completely taking off shows only to bring them back at another time, move their time with little warning, or simply stop airing a show. One such show was Zatch Bell, which after Episode 77 suddenly just stopped airing. If you're looking for the next installment you're in luck for now, as Toonami's Jetstream website is currently airing Episode 78, so jump on it Zatch Bell fans.
