Cameron Says 'Avatar 2' Not Necessarily Next Film

    Cameron Writing 'Avatar' Prequel Novel?

Producer Jon Landau, while talking with MTV, revealed that James Cameron is going to be writing a prequel to Avatar. The more surprising news is that he's writing the prequel as a novel.

"Jim is going to write a novel himself," the film's producer, Jon Landau, told us when he stopped by the MTV News studios recently. "Not a novelization — and there is a distinction. A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things. [We] won't have time to do [these stories] in the movie, or maybe in sequels," Landau explained of what Cameron will be writing about. "[So the novel will] give a foundation for the world. It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that," Landau explained.

James Cameron Might Not Direct 'Avatar 2'

Avatar is a huge, monstrous hit, so it's no surprise that the studio is quick to want a sequel for the film. News today has it that James Cameron might not direct the second film himself, as he has some other projects in the work that he might want to do first. One film that could keep him from directing Avatar 2 is his adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, which he's been wanting to do for a while.

"We're still figuring that out," Cameron said. "I love Battle Angel. I've always loved Battle Angel, but a second Avatar film is a possibility, and I've got a couple of other films that I've developed over the last few years as well. So it's all still up in the air."

World Ending - 'Avatar' Drops From Number One Spot

Avatar just received a bunch of Oscar nominations this week, but that new buzz worthy news didn't help the film enough to keep it at the number one spot. After seven weeks spent at the number one spot, Avatar has finally fallen to second place, ending up right behind the new film Dear John. I guess people like sappy love stories revolving around people being sent off to war...or maybe they're just hoping for a sequel to The Notebook (same author).

First Plot Details For 'Avatar 2'?

The most successful film of all-time is going to be getting a sequel - well, that's not surprising. It's a little too early to assume anything about a sequel is true, but there are rumors circulating right now about what the second film could be about. Rumor has it that the second film will be a full-blown war between the Na'vi and humans.

Is 'Avatar 2' Already Gearing Up?

Avatar is the highest-grossing movie of all-time, so of course a sequel is going to be coming. Based on rumors, it seems that Cameron is already gearing up for the sequel, as it's being reported that he's sent out contracts to the technical crew, which would have them attached to the sequel for around three to five years. If this is true, I wouldn't be surprised if he filmed two back-to-back.

'Avatar' Highest Grossing Movie Of All-Time

It's now official: Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all-time, beating out the number one film, which was James Cameron's very own Titantic.

"Twentieth Century Fox said that the sci-fi epic had amassed an estimated global total box office take of $1.8437 billion, just ahead of Titanic's worldwide total of $1,843,201,268, according to The Hollywood Reporter."

So a new benchmark has been set. It looks like the only thing that might top Avatar is Avatar 2...or whatever big movie comes next from Cameron.

'Avatar' Wins Big At Golden Globes

Avatar was the big winner last night at the Golden Globes, as it not only won for Best Director, but for Best Film (Drama). In other sci-fi/fantasy winners from last night, Up won for Best Animated Picture.

    'Avatar' Has Seeds Of Sequel

When talking with Entertainment Weekly, James Cameron said the following regarding an Avatar sequel:

"I've had a storyline in mind from the start—there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel," Cameron says. "It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan."

So we know there will at least be one Avatar sequel - maybe two - but can anyone remember what scenes possibly had hints to what the sequel would follow? I'm trying to think, but I can't think of any right now.

'Avatar,' 'GI Joe,' and 'District 9' Looking To Become Franchises

Well, as Meat Loaf once put it, two out of three ain't bad. Word is going around that there are several sci-fi/fantasy properties that are looking to turn into franchises with the release of a new film. First up is word that a new GI Joe movie might be in the works and that Zombieland's Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will be writing the script. Up next, while answering questions at a screening of Avatar, he revealed that "Yes, there'll be another" in regards to another film set in the Avatar universe. And finally there's word that director Neill Blomkamp might be working on a new District 9 film, but that it might not be a sequel as initially thought.

"The concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet," says the helmer, who points out that if such a film did happen it won't be his next. "All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn't mind messing around with it again. I'm open to it if the story works and there's a reason to do it. And [(Sharlto) Copley's character] Wikus is so funny to me, I'm very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond District 9] it's more of a traditional film but if you go backward I'd be intrigued in that. I'm not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting."

'Avatar' DVD/Blu Will Have Na'vi Sex

While there's sex in Avatar, you'd hardly know it, since all it consists of is a little holding and rolling around. As it turns out, Cameron actually filmed a sex scene, but it was edited to give the movie a PG-13 rating. When the movie comes out on DVD and Blu-ray next year (assuming - why not) the special edition will actually have the sex scene included.

Don't expect boobs bouncing and groins thrusting. Instead, much like how the Na'vi interact with the animals of the world, it looks like Na'vi sex is chiefly concerned with using those hair implant tentacle things to interact with each other.

    'Avatar' Passes $1 Billion

Avatar is certainly proving itself to be a juggernaut at the box office. The movie made $68.3 million, which is the most ever for a film in its third week (it bested the first Spider-Man film). "After 17 days, Avatar has grossed $352.1 million in the U.S. and Canada, placing it at number 15 among all movies in terms of ticket sales."

In terms of worldwide sells, the movie has already made over $1 billion.

If Avatar's trend at the box office continues, it could top Cameron's last film - Titanic - as the highest grossing movie of all-time. To show how well Avatar is doing, Titanic only made $241 million during its first 17 days.

'Avatar' Still Number One At The Box Office

For the second week in a row, James Cameron's Avatar is once again the number one movie at the box office, managing to beat out newcomers Sherlock Holmes (second place) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel (third). Avatar finished in first with an estimated $75-million, but the biggest news is that it only saw a decline of 3% from last week, which means excellent word of mouth. The movie certainly seems on its way to making its money back and being a huge hit too.
